2020 Challenge - Participants

Its that Time of year again, time to start a new investment challenge.  We always invite new participants. Since M* deleted past years challenges I am having to post these rules from memory.  At the start of the contest each participant is given ( by Boris ) $1,000,000.00 to invest wisely. Participants can join in at any time. Post your starting portfolio and post all buys and sells timely. At the end of each month I will ask all participants to post their current portfolio and balance so others in the group may learn from your progress (or lack there of). I will post current standings by the 5th of each month or as soon as I receive all results. Winner will be held in awe by other contestants for a full day. Anything I have forgot? Remember, Boris will be watching us, he is a tough task master. He likes to send folks to Siberia.

Re: 2020 Challenge - Participants

Thanks, @RichinKansas, for asking the participants to also post their portfolio at the end of each month. Much appreciated.

Here is my conservative "Retirement Portfolio" with which I will start the new year:

CSIEX                     $100,000

USMV                      100,000

PCI                           200,000

JMUIX                     300,000

PUCZX                    300,000

Per Portfolio Visualizer, the risk/return stats of this portfolio for the past three years are:

CAGR                       11.78%

Std Dev                      4.27

Sharpe                       2.27

Max DD                   -4.29

My aim is to beat the total return of VWINX in 2020. The fund had a very similar Standard Deviation of 4.35 during the past three years.

Re: 2020 Challenge - Participants

RichinKansas - it’s a lot easier when it’s even more fake money then the portfolio balance on our latest statement. I’ll probably be adding another laggard to that. There will be no changes because I tongue lashed my one son about the dart throwing market timing investment method. Lol. At least I currently own all mine. Wishful thinking = throwing the dart blindfolded. Sure I’ll try to get back 1/2/2020 in the morning.

I'll be buying the following at closing prices 1/2. My goal is to beat the S&P in times of economic growth and will be gauging against VFINX which is beating me in 2019. And plan to go to cash if a recession looms. This portfolio matches closely to my real retirement port percentage wise except my real port has 8% cash types.

Hey Rich

I notice that both FBSOX and FSCSX are sagging a bit relative  to FOCPX. Does this concern you?  I own both FBSOX and FOCPX and am wondering  if I should trade one for FOCPX.

In my port for 2020 vs 2019 I am expanding from 4 funds to 7. Reducing both FBSOX & FSCSX and adding FOCPX & FSPTX. Will still have the same amount of tech, just putting it in 4 funds instead of two. Healthcare will be increased a bit and Consumer Discretionary reduced. Also showing two funds now for taxable. FNCMX has a bit of tech. I have a spreadsheet with numbers from M* showing percent of a fund allocated to each sector. It is not real accurate but indicates I will still be about 29% Tech. I still think FBSOX & FSCSX are great long term investments but are in doldrums for now. They had a great year in 2019 and if they pick up steam again I will increase there percentage.

RichinKansas - I don’t really think I belong here but I’ll submit this portfolio for 2020. I’ll update the balance when I can. Being an income investor and taking more risk for the greater reward I don’t deal with funds or spend down much. Thanks for letting me post and feel free to kick me out. Lol. This really is apples to oranges.

We all have different goals so I am not sure we can even compare the contestants we already have. I would like to think we can learn from each others portfolio and maybe incorporate that which suits our goals and temperament. I am not the only one here with a retirement portfolio (I am 77), but I don't see much need for me to change my process. I'm still trying to accumulate so I don't need to worry about some 4% rule. I don't believe in bonds, others do, in fact most do. So I'm on the fringe.

Here are the details of my conservative "Retirement Portfolio" for the 2020 Challenge. I am using the 12/31/2019 closing prices:

                              Price                    Shares                       Amount

CSIEX                   $55.18                 1,812.251                $100,000.00

USMV                   65.60                  1,524.000                    99,974.40

PCI                        25.20                  7,936.000                  199,987.20

JMUIX                   9.98                 30,063.967                  300,038.40

PUCZX                 10.46                 28,680.688                  300,000.00

Total                                                                              $1,000,000.00

My aim is to beat the total return of VWINX in 2020. Over the past three years, my portfolio and VWINX had almost identical standard deviations.

Again, Rich, thanks for coordinating the Challenge. Much appreciated.
